Why CEN

Strengthening Christian schools to teach faithfully, govern wisely, and flourish for the long term

Through formation, partnership, and research, CEN helps Christian schools remain faithful to their purpose while navigating the growing complexity of contemporary education.

Christian schools operate in an increasingly challenging climate. Cultural expectations shift. Regulatory pressure grows. Leadership transitions, enrolment pressures, and the responsibility of delivering Christian education with integrity place weight on boards, principals, and their teams.

We work alongside associations, boards, principals, and leaders in parent-governed schools to support wise decision-making, faithful stewardship, and long-term organisational thriving. Our work contributes to a growing national movement of Christian education across Australia.

Biblical foundations shape how we think and act

Our work is centred on the lordship of Christ over all of life, including education. We affirm parents as holding the primary responsibility for the raising of their children and understand schools as communities that serve them in this God-given task.

We take seriously a Christian understanding of the human person: created, fallen, redeemed, and called to faithful living.

This foundation leads us to ask deeper questions that shape practice rather than remaining abstract. What is education for? What does it mean to be human? How does formation occur over time? What does faithfulness look like in this cultural moment?

Research that strengthens conviction and clarity

Through the National Institute for Christian Education, CEN invests in postgraduate study, research, publications, and teacher formation initiatives that serve Christian schools. This includes accredited postgraduate programs, applied research projects, and publications such as The Christian Journal (CTJ).

This work strengthens the intellectual and philosophical foundations of Christian schooling. It informs leadership development, professional learning, and CEN’s wider services, helping leaders and boards to grow teachers in their calling, and provide authentic Christian education.

Practice shaped by theological depth

We help schools move conviction into practice through whole-school formation experiences and professional learning. Programs such as Authentic Christian Education, Birth, Battle, Build, Bible in the Belly of the School (‘BITBOTS’), and other formation initiatives support schools to embed Christian understanding into curriculum, culture, leadership, and governance.

We are stronger together

CEN is a national, member-based network committed to shared responsibility for the future of Christian education in Australia.

Belonging to CEN means learning from others, contributing generously, and resisting isolation. Through professional networks, shared research, collaboration between boards and leaders, professional learning opportunities, and collective advocacy, our schools are strengthened beyond what any one school could sustain independently.

Advocacy that safeguards the sector

CEN works to protect the conditions in which Christian schooling can flourish. Through sector representation, regulatory engagement, partnerships with aligned organisations, and national collaboration, including advocacy through the Australian Association of Christian Schools (AACS), we help safeguard the freedom, viability, and long-term sustainability of Christian schools in Australia.
