Who we support

Boards

Serving on the board of a Christian school is a serious and wonderful calling

Board members carry spiritual stewardship, legal accountability, and long-term consequences for staff, families and future generations, often alongside their own full professional and personal commitments.

Christian Education National partners with boards and associations to guard and promote the Christian purpose of their school, steward resources wisely, strengthen leadership, and govern with godly character, discernment, diligence and wisdom.

Our role is to support boards to govern faithfully, proactively, and well, so Christian schools flourish as Christ-centred communities not only now, but for years to come.

How CEN walks alongside boards

At the right depth, at the right time.

CEN supports boards through measured, role-appropriate support, rather than one-size-fits-all intervention.  We understand and cherish parent governance and are here to stand alongside our boards as you govern on behalf of your Associations.

School membership with CEN provides boards with shared language, governance frameworks, review and reflection practices, and ongoing relational access that supports faithful governance over time.

This creates stability and confidence, particularly during periods of transition or increased scrutiny.

CEN’s suite of comprehensive online training modules, governance handbook, templates and other resources help our boards to achieve governance practice that strengthens their school.

When issues become complex, sensitive, or high-stakes, boards may engage confidential advisory or consultancy support.

This provides structured thinking space, independent perspective, and guidance, without rushing to conclusions or public escalation. Your State Executive Officer (SEO) and the Manager of Governance and Consulting Services are here to help, and are often turned to as an issue emerges.

Being able to speak to a trusted CEN advisor can make all the difference to the process, outcome, and your wellbeing.

The unique pressure boards face

Christian school boards carry responsibility in environments shaped by scrutiny, complexity, and competing expectations. More than that, they must govern the school so that it fulfils its Christian vision and mission.

During seasons of change or uncertainty, even experienced boards can hesitate; concerned about escalation, reputational risk, or unintended consequences.

Boards commonly partner with CEN when navigating situations such as:

  • hiring, supporting, or reviewing a principal
  • responding to complaints, conflict or conduct
  • concerns about financial viability
  • regulatory and compliance obligations
  • strategic planning under uncertainty
  • board member availability, capability gaps or turnover
  • strained board–principal relationships
  • reputational risk
  • fatigue and overload
  • strengthening their Association

Why boards trust CEN

A critical friend within the Christian education movement

CEN combines deep biblical foundations with practical expertise in parent-governed Christian schooling.

Board chairs have access to confidential advice when issues cannot yet be raised formally. CEN’s posture is that of a trusted critical friend, willing to surface misalignment early and support realignment before issues escalate.

Because CEN operates within a national Christian education movement, boards also benefit from sector-wide advocacy delivered through the Australian Association of Christian Schools (AACS). This advocacy strengthens the environment in which boards govern faithfully, without replacing board responsibility or intervening in individual school matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is so important for a board to ask this. Boards are answerable to God and to their Associations, but are tasked with monitoring and ensuring their own performance. CEN provides assessment tools, standards, training and advice so you can be assured about your practice, and know how to address any areas for improvement.

CEN membership is key to this! CEN schools share an understanding of the importance and nature of Christian schooling. Just as God intended individual believers to serve and belong to each other, our schools share support, knowledge and materials with each other, for the good of Christian schooling, and the kingdom.

…Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms (1 Peter 4:10)

CEN facilitates schools serving each other, humbly recognising (and enjoying) the wealth of knowledge and talent in our network – our schools are stronger together!

Congratulations! Board chair is such a critical role in the life of your school. Contact your State Executive Officer who can give you access to online training modules for chairs, put you in touch with our Manager of Governance and Consulting Services, involve you in a network, and make sure you have the dates of our conferences and webinars.

No. Strong boards seek external perspective before issues escalate. We know that all who are prudent act with knowledge… (Prov 13:16).

CEN provides frameworks, training, resources and performance review tools so that boards can work proactively and continuously on improving their practice. When needed, wrap-around supports can also be provided to navigate out of complexity and overcome additional challenges.

There are lots of providers of governance information, tools and training. All CEN resources embed a biblical worldview and are designed specifically for Board formation and equipping members for parent governance in a Christian school. We specialise in supporting the mission of our schools and working together to provide a Christ-centred ‘all things’ education.

Yes.  CEN considers the opportunity to stand beside schools a privilege that requires absolute trustworthiness. We recognise the significance and sensitivity of the situations and information that is shared and seek always to operate in the interests of schools and their communities. All information, opinions and recommendations of CEN staff and consultants are treated with the utmost confidentiality.

No. CEN works alongside boards, respecting established governance structures and the proper authorities in place. Our Boards are chosen by their Associations to carry out the work of governance on their behalf. The Association members are the people responsible for the school – to hold it to its Christian purposes, and ensure it fulfils its vision and mission. This means the board have authority under God to make decisions, use resources, employ and care for staff, and to protect and guide the school.

Consulting projects and tailored engagements are scoped and quoted separately, with discounted rates for member schools. We understand that schools are operating on tight margins and are appropriately prudent about the use of their resources. Contact us to discuss your options and how we can help in a cost-effective and high-value way.

Taking the next step

Most boards begin with a confidential conversation. This may involve speaking with a State Executive Officer (SEO), reviewing the Christian School Governance Standard, or reflecting together on current pressures and priorities.

From there, boards may engage with tools, training, advisory conversations, or tailored consultancy support as appropriate.
