Southern Highlands Christian School is seeking a passionate, NESA-accredited Junior School teacher to join our Junior School team.  Applications are warmly welcomed from experienced teachers and from those earlier in their careers.

We are a Preschool to Year 12 co-educational day school offering nurturing, challenging, Christ-centred learning, set on seven acres on the outskirts of Bowral in the beautiful Southern Highlands.  Junior School at SHCS is where young learners are  known, seen and loved – building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, and growing in wonder, curiosity and character within a Christ-centred community.

THE POSITION

Department:  Junior School
Status:  2027 school year contract, 0.8 FTE, commencing Term 1, 2027

  • Suitably qualified and NESA accredited in NSW, with a genuine passion for Christian education.
  • Qualified to teach a Junior School classroom across Early Stage 1 to Stage 3 (Kindergarten to Year 6); confidence delivering structured, evidence-based literacy and numeracy programs is highly regarded.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and an understanding of the developmental, spiritual and emotional needs of young children.
  • Effective classroom management strategies suited to younger children, fostering a settled, engaged and positive learning environment.
  • Competent with technology in teaching and learning and committed to your own ongoing professional learning.
  • A commitment to a child safe culture, strong parent partnerships, staff devotions and the wider life of the school.
  • A current employed Working with Children Check.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, deliver and evaluate engaging classroom programs across the Key Learning Areas, compliant with NESA requirements and taught from a Biblical perspective.
  • Build strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, using explicit, evidence-based teaching practice suited to the needs of young learners, including but not limited to the MultiLit suite of programs.
  • Develop students’ curiosity, creativity and critical thinking across all Key Learning Areas, building confidence in reading, writing and spoken expression.
  • Foster a positive, child safe classroom culture with clear expectations, differentiating learning and liaising with Learning Support so every student is appropriately supported.
  • Implement quality assessment practices, monitoring student progress and reporting accurately and on time.
  • Care pastorally for students so each is known, seen and loved; communicate with parents in line with school policy; and contribute to stage planning and to the pastoral and co-curricular life of the Junior School.

CHILD SAFETY

At SHCS, child safety is inseparable from who we are.  Our commitment that every student is known, seen and loved means building a culture where children are safe, listened to, and confident that any concern they raise will be taken seriously and acted upon.

The School complies with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012 and the NSW Child Safe Standards.  Every staff member shares this responsibility: implementing our child safety policies, maintaining professional boundaries,  promptly reporting any risk of harm, and modelling the care and respect we ask of our students.  We seek to appoint people who welcome that responsibility.

WORK HEALTH AND SAFETY

The School is committed to a healthy and safe workplace.  All staff must take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others, follow work health and safety policies and procedures, and participate in school safety by completing risk  assessments and reporting hazards and incidents.
